Castel was Procureur-syndic for the Vire district during the Revolution, and turned to writing this poem for relief: "This work was composed from Year I to Year V. It often consoled me to occupy myself with it. Who has not felt more than once the need to take refuge in the bosom of nature? As I have always loved plants, this was the first object that offered itself to my thoughts." He later compiled an abridged edition of Buffon, and a Cours complet d'histoire naturelle (1799-1802). (Source: Nouvelle Biographie Générale.)
Bound in calf, boards divided into two concentric panels (outer, mottled, inner, tree-calf) by gilt decorative borders. Gilt rolls on board edges.
